A statement from Francis X. Rienzo Director of Athletics Lee Reed on the retirement of BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman
"Val Ackerman's impact on the BIG EAST Conference as well as the broader landscape of intercollegiate athletics is profound and lasting.
Val was instrumental in not only stabilizing the conference during that moment, but in moving it forward with clarity and purpose. Under her leadership, the BIG EAST has not just endured, it has thrived as one of the premier basketball conferences in the country.
Over the past decade, she has strengthened critical partnerships, elevated the visibility of our programs, and ensured that the conference remained aligned with both high academic standards and the evolving demands of college athletics. Her steady, strategic approach built a foundation that will benefit the BIG EAST for years to come.
Beyond her accomplishments, Val has been an exceptional partner and leader, working closely with then President DeGioia as they navigated a complex time for the league. She has consistently demonstrated integrity, vision, and a deep commitment to both the student-athletes and the values that define the BIG EAST. Working alongside her has been both a learning experience and a privilege.
On behalf of Georgetown Athletics, I want to thank Val for her extraordinary service, leadership and friendship. We wish her and her family all the best in this next chapter, with a deep appreciation for all she has done for the BIG EAST Conference and intercollegiate athletics."
