Hoyas Defeat Virginia 14-10 to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team defeated fifth-seeded Virginia in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Sunday night at Klockner Stadium. The Hoyas improve to 11-4 on the season and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 14th time in program history.
 
Hoya Highlights How it Happened
  • Virginia took the early advantage with a pair of goals in the first 2:12 of action to lead 2-0. Georgetown responded with three goals of its own to go up 3-2, but the Cavs responded with a 3-0 run to close out the first quarter and take a 5-3 advantage.
  • Following an opening UVA goal at the 11:19 mark in the second to lead 6-3, the Blue & Gray answered just 19 seconds later to spark a 5-1 run the rest of the half. The Hoyas scored a pair of goals in the final 21 seconds to take an 8-7 lead into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, Georgetown's offense continued to hit, adding another two goals over the course of the first 10 minutes of the second half to lead 10-7.  Virginia's goal with 3:11 remaining in the third snapped a 20:07 scoreless streak. The Cavaliers added another goal with 19 seconds remaining in the frame to pull within one, down 10-9, with 15 minutes to play.
  • Georgetown held its hosts at bay in the fourth, putting four goals on the board to lead 14-9 with 2:59 before Virginia added one with 2:45 to salvage the 14-10 score.
Virginia Notes
  • Ryan Colsey and Truitt Sunderland both had two goals for the Cavaliers while Brendan Millon and McCabe Millon both had a goal and two assists.
  • Virginia's trio of faceoff specialists went 16-for-28 (.571) on faceoffs with eight ground balls.
  • Defensively, John Schroter had three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • In goal, Jake Marek had nine saves in the loss.
Georgetown Notes
  • The Hoyas win over Virginia is the first in program history. Georgetown is now 1-6 all-time against the Cavaliers, including a 1-4 mark in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Georgetown advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 14th time in program history and the fifth time under Head Coach Kevin Warne. The Hoyas have advanced in each of the last four seasons as well.
  • Rory Connor moves into fifth-place all-time in single season goals, tying Steve Dusseau (C'02) with 53. He also moves into 12th place all-time in a single season points with 67, passing Jake Carraway (B'20, MiM'21), Dylan Watson (B'22) and Scott Urick (C'00).
  • Moore moves into seventh place all-time in career saves at Georgetown, passing Scott Schroeder (B'02) with 518.
