WASHINGTON – After some solid showings at the Eastern Sprints this past weekend, boats from both the men's heavyweight and lightweight programs have qualified for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship at the end of the month in California
The heavyweight squad will advance its first, second and third varsity 8+ boats, along with the varsity 4+. At the Eastern Sprints, the varsity 8+ won the third final in 5:49.941. The second varsity 8+ placed third in the third final with a time of 6:10.677, while the third varsity 8+ finished second in the third final at 6:28.013. Additionally, the varsity 4+ secured third in the grand final, clocking 7:16.873.
On the lightweight side, the Hoyas will field two 8+ boats and one 4+ boat at the national championship. During the Eastern Sprints, the varsity lightweight 8+ placed second in the petite final with a time of 5:55.636, and the second varsity lightweight 8+ finished fourth in the grand final in 6:05.717. The lightweight 4+ also secured qualification for the national regatta.
The 123rd IRA National Championship Regatta will take place from May 29-31. The event will be hosted at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma in Gold River, California.
