Hoyas Roll Past Morgan State in Straight Sets

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University volleyball team defeated Morgan State 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) on Friday night at Hill Field House to open the Battle of the Beltway. With the win, the Hoyas improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Bears fell to 1-6.

Trailing 20-19 late in the first set, Georgetown answered out of a timeout with a 6-2 run fueled by two Katherine McGregor kills to claim a 25-22 win. Grace Albaugh and Dionna Mitchell combined for nine of the Hoyas' 15 kills as the team hit .286 in the frame.

Morgan State held a 12-9 lead midway through the second set before two Berkeley Ploder kills alongside offensive answers from Mitchell and Albaugh sparked a 4-1 run to knot the score at 13. Georgetown once again found its rhythm late, pulling away for a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 match lead.

Juleigh Urbina directed the Georgetown offense with four assists and a service ace to spark an early 8-3 lead in the third set. The Hoyas held off the Bears the rest of the way, cruising to a 25-18 victory to complete the 3-0 sweep.
 
Hoya Highlights
  • Mitchell led the attack with a match-high 12 kills, followed by Kamryn Lee-Caracci (9) and McGregor (8), while Ploder and Albaugh totaled seven kills apiece.
  • Urbina paced the offense with a  match-high 35 assists and added 11 digs for a double-double.
  • Taylor Mercado anchored the defense with a match-high 15 digs, while Mitchell posted 13 to record a double-double.
  • Mitchell led the front line with two blocks.
  • Georgetown finished with 44 kills to Morgan State's 32 while outhitting the Bears .250 to .171.
  • The Hoyas dished out 40 assists compared to 29 for the Bears.
  • Defensively, Georgetown held a 54-42 advantage in digs, while both squads recorded four blocks.
