WASHINGTON – Georgetown sailed three regattas hosted by Navy on the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay this weekend and finished third in all three. The Hoyas won the B division at both the Chesapeake Open and the Chesapeake Invitational, and put Nissa Berman on the podium at the Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship.
 
It was a weekend that tested patience more than boat speed. Saturday's light northeasterly shut off mid-race and sent the fleets ashore before a five-knot easterly allowed a brief restart. Sunday opened in a workable moderate southerly on trapezoid courses at the mouth of the Severn before the breeze went southwest, turned very shifty and ended racing early across all three regattas.
 
Chesapeake Open
U.S. Naval Academy, Severn River / Chesapeake Bay - 420s, 9 teams, 8 races

• Georgetown finished third with 79 points behind Navy (53) and St. Mary's (72).
• A Division - Alex Baker skippered the first six races with Irene Lin crewing through race five and Lucy Jervis aboard for race six. Jack Duffy and Lia Nafe sailed race seven. The boat finished fifth in its division with 55 points.
• B Division - Oscar Parzen and crew Leyla Amjad won the division outright with 24 points, five clear of Navy's 29 and more than 20 ahead of third-place St. Mary's. Their score was what carried Georgetown onto the podium; the Hoyas were fifth in A and first in B.

Chesapeake Invitational
U.S. Naval Academy, Severn River / Chesapeake Bay - FJs, 6 teams, 9 races

• A three-division event, Georgetown finished third with 169 points.
• A Division - Peter Barnard and crew Teddy Stoldt took third with 65 points.
• B Division - Peter Herlihy and crew Scarlett Harris won the division with 37 points, seven ahead of Navy (44) and eight ahead of St. Mary's (45).
• C Division - Owen Kohut and crew Ellie Smith finished second with 67 points, three off St. Mary's and clear of the rest of the fleet.
• Georgetown scored a podium finish in all three divisions - the only school other than Navy to do so.

Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship
U.S. Naval Academy, Severn River / Chesapeake Bay - Radials, 18 sailors from 9 schools, 8 races

• Berman finished third with 62 points, tied on points with Fordham's Amelon Rule and taking the podium spot on the tiebreaker.
• Georgetown finishers: Nissa Berman: 3rd with 62 points, Abigail Chang: 14th with 151 points.
• Sunday's racing in this fleet was the weekend's hardest. After the southerly went southwest and turned shifty, the fleet relocated to the Chesapeake, where - in the race committee's own words - "huge oscillations made race management extremely tricky." 
• Berman will now wait to see if she is an at large selection for the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championships in November.

Standout Performances

• Oscar Parzen and Leyla Amjad - won B division at the Chesapeake Open with 24 points, the lowest divisional score of any boat in the nine-team fleet, Navy's winning A division included.
• Peter Herlihy and Scarlett Harris - won B division at the Chesapeake Invitational, beating Navy by seven.
• Nissa Berman - third at the MAISA women's singlehanded championship on a tiebreaker, a week after winning B division at the Navy Women's Regatta. Two events, two podiums, as a freshman.
• Owen Kohut and Ellie Smith - second in C division at the Chesapeake Invitational, completing Georgetown's podium sweep of all three divisions.
