Georgetown Wins at SMC Open

WASHINGTON – Georgetown sailed a single event on a weekend that saw racing canceled up and down the East Coast due to the Nor'easter. At the SMC Open, hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland on the St. Mary's River, the Hoyas entered four teams in a 16-team fleet and finished first and second overall, with Hoyas 4 taking the regatta with 115 points and Hoyas 1 earning second tallying 122. Georgetown also won both division titles - Hoyas 4 in A Division and Hoyas 1 in B Division - across 14 races per division.

SMC Open
Host: St. Mary's College of Maryland
Venue: St. Mary's River
Boats: 420/FJ
16 teams · 14 races per division

Result: Hoyas 4 - 1st (115 points), Hoyas 1 - 2nd (122), Hoyas 2 - 9th (254), Hoyas 3 - 14th (325)
  • Conditions held up all weekend while events elsewhere on the eastern seaboard were abandoned. Winds were strong often gusting into the mid 20 knots, but the venue was sheltered so racing was never interrupted even with rain squalls.
  • Georgetown won the A Division with Owen Kohut skippering and Sophia Skrivanich crewing in the Hoyas 4 boat, scoring 57 points, 19 points clear of the next boat. Kohut and Skrivanich were remarkably consistent, never finishing worse than ninth across 14 races, collecting eleven top-five finishes and closing with a race win in race 13.
  • Alex Baker and Lauren Montgomery sailed Hoyas 1 to 79 points, tied for third in the division, with a race win in race three and seven top-five finishes.
  • Isabel Massey and Helen O'Neill put Hoyas 2 in 11th with 137 points in A, highlighted by a second in race 12 and fourths in races 1, 8 and 14.
  • Poshu Ng and Lucy Fleckenstein sailed Hoyas 3 to 188 points and 16th in the division, with a pair of ninths in races two and six which was their best of the weekend.
  • Georgetown comfortably won the B Division as well.
  • Oscar Parzen, crewed by Irene Lin and Skye Seymour, took Hoyas 1 to 43 points which included three race wins, in races two, three and six. It was seven points clear of Navy's leading boat.
  • Lin sailed races 1-9 and 12-14. and Seymour stepped in for races 10 and 11, with the boat scoring a seventh and a second in her two races.
  • Conrad Cook and Lia Nafe finished third in B for Hoyas 4 on 58 points, with race wins in races one and five.
  • Maddie Rode and Alex Oh were eighth in B for Hoyas 2 on 117 points, winning race 11 outright.
  • James Martino and Kinsleigh Engler sailed Hoyas 3 to 137 points and 10th in the division, with a third in race 11 as their best result.
Standout Performances
  • A 1-2 overall in a 16-boat fleet as Hoyas 4 and Hoyas 1 finished first and second with 36 and 29 points, respectively. They were ahead of Navy's Midshipmen 1 in third (151).
  • Hoyas 4 won A Division on 57 points with Kohut and Skrivanich, while Hoyas 1 won B Division on 43 with Parzen and crews Lin and Seymour. No other school won a division.
  • Hoyas 4 was in the top three in both divisions as Kohut/Skrivanich took first in A, and Cook/Nafe were third in B. Cook/Nafe was the only boat in the fleet inside the top three on both sides of the scoresheet, and the reason the winning margin over their own teammates was just seven points.
  • Georgetown won eight individual races over the weekend including three to Parzen/Lin, two to Cook/Nafe and one apiece to Kohut/Skrivanich, Baker/Montgomery and Rode/Oh.
