WASHINGTON – Georgetown University volleyball team opened BIG EAST play on Friday afternoon, falling 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 27-25) to Xavier at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. With the result, the Hoyas drop to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in conference action, while the Musketeers improve to 8-4 and 1-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas and Musketeers traded points for much of the first set until Xavier used a 3-0 surge to take a 20-17 lead. GU attempted to rally behind kills from
Kamryn Lee-Caracci and
Dionna Mitchell, but the Musketeers held on for the 25-19 win.
Following another tight start, Xavier put together a 5-2 run to build a 20-16 lead in the second set. Despite a trio of late kills from Lee-Caracci, Xavier pulled away for a 25-21 win to take a 2-0 match lead.
Georgetown faced an early 10-7 deficit in the third set before kills from
Katherine McGregor and
Avery Lewis sparked a 7-1 surge, putting the Blue and Gray ahead 14-11. The Hoyas expanded their lead to 20-14, but Xavier mounted a late comeback to tie the set at 24. The Musketeers would then close out the frame for the 27-25 win.
Hoya Highlights
- Lee-Caracci led the attack with 12 kills on a team-best .375 hitting percentage, while McGregor floored nine kills and Mitchell added eight.
- Juleigh Urbina directed the offense with a match-high 41 assists.
- Bella McGirr led three Hoyas in double-digit digs with a team-high 14, followed by Taylor Mercado with 12 and Urbina with 10 to complete her double-double.
- Ploder led Georgetown at the net with three total blocks, with McGregor adding two.
- Georgetown finished with 45 kills to Xavier's 44.
