WASHINGTON – Georgetown volleyball fell 3-1 (21-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-16) to Butler on Saturday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. With the loss the Hoyas drop to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Bulldogs move to 8-6 and 2-0 in the conference.
Juniors
Berkeley Ploder and
Dionna Mitchell opened the match strong, each recording three early kills to give the Hoyas a 15-12 lead midway through the first set. After trading points, Georgetown closed out the set on a service ace from
Juleigh Urbina to win 25-21. Ploder finished with five kills on a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage, while the Blue & Gray hit .391 as a team.
Butler opened the second set on a 10-3 run before a pair of kills from Mitchell halted the momentum out of a Georgetown timeout. The Bulldog offense kept rolling, however, as Butler claimed the set 25-10.
BU continued to find their rhythm through multiple scoring spurts, utilizing a 7-1 run to lead 17-8 midway through the third set. The Hoyas attempted to rally behind Bulldog errors and a block from Ploder, but Butler would secure the 25-18 victory.
Georgetown faced a nine-point deficit late in the fourth set and rallied behind kills from Mitchell and
Kamryn Lee-Caracci, but Butler held on for the 25-16 win to seal the match.
Hoya Highlights
- Mitchell led the attack with 11 kills, while Ploder floored eight on a team-best .500 hitting percentage.
- Urbina orchestrated the offense with 20 assists while serving up a team-high three aces.
- Bella McGirr anchored the defense with a team-high 13 digs, while Urbina fell just shy of a double-double with nine and Mitchell added six.
- Ploder controlled the net defense with a match-high five total blocks, while Katherine McGregor recorded four.
- Georgetown posted seven team blocks compared to Butler's four.
