GU Drops Wake Forest Invitational Opener to UCF in Four Sets

WASHINGTON – Georgetown volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision (21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18) to undefeated UCF on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Wake Forest Invitational at Varsity Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 2-2 on the season while the Knights improve to 4-0.

The Hoyas took control early in the first set, jumping out to a 13-5 lead powered by seven kills on a .667 hitting percentage that forced two quick UCF timeouts. The Knights responded with a 7-2 run, cutting the margin to 15-12. However, GU's quartet of Kamryn Lee-Caracci, Berkeley Ploder, Katherine McGregor and Maria Filippova combined for 14 of the team's 16 kills in the set to secure a 25-21 victory for the Hoyas.

UCF took control of the second set early with a 15-6 lead. Georgetown attempted a late push using service errors from the Knights and kills from Ploder and Grace Albaugh, but UCF held on for a 25-16 win to tie the match at 1-1.

The Knights and Hoyas traded points early in the third set before three separate 3-0 runs put UCF ahead 15-7. Georgetown mounted a late rally to cut the deficit to four and force a UCF timeout, but the Knights responded to close it out with a 25-18 victory.

Despite falling behind 11-6, the Hoyas drew even at 15-15 behind two kills each from Ploder and Lee-Caracci, alongside a series of UCF errors. From there, the Knights closed out the set on a 10-3 run to secure a 25-18 victory and seal the match.
