Hoyas Defeat Wake Forest 3-1

WASHINGTON – Behind a balanced attack and a season-high 58 kills, the Georgetown University volleyball team earned its first victory over a power conference opponent since 2015, defeating host Wake Forest 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19) on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Arena. With the win to close out the Wake Forest Invitational, the Hoyas improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Demon Deacons fall to 2-3.

"It's great to schedule opportunities like this for our team to prove to ourselves how far we have come. Great team win; all facets of our game were firing today. Proud of the effort today and over the entire weekend! Hoya Saxa!" - Head Coach AJ Bonetti

"We kept our focus throughout and made Wake uncomfortable in their own gym. Amazing execution from our attackers today and shoutout to our back row for extending rallies for us. First power conference win since 2015 means a lot to us!" - Senior Kamryn Lee-Caracci

The Demon Deacons jumped out to an 8-2 lead, forcing an early Georgetown timeout in the opening set. The Hoyas attempted to rally with kills from Kamryn Lee-Caracci and Berkeley Ploder, but Wake Forest took the frame 25-18.

Outside hitters Dionna Mitchell and Katherine McGregor got more involved offensively in the second set, sparking a 6-4 lead to force a Demon Deacon timeout. Georgetown built its margin to as many as six points before a McGregor kill sealed the 25-19 win. The Hoyas hit .297 in the second set, more than doubling their .125 clip from the opener.

Both teams traded points through the middle of the third set before Georgetown used a 9-3 scoring run to build a 21-15 lead. Once again, McGregor closed out the set with a kill, giving the Hoyas a 25-20 victory.

Georgetown carried that momentum into the fourth set to take an early 6-4 lead before Wake Forest responded with four straight points to go ahead by two. The Hoyas answered with a 4-1 run fueled by Demon Deacon errors and kills from McGregor and Lee-Caracci to reclaim an 18-15 advantage. Kills from Lee-Caracci and Mitchell halted a late Wake Forest push as Georgetown closed out the set 25-19 to wrap up the match.
