Hoyas Defeat American, 62-52

Washington, D.C. (Dec. 19, 1999) -- Georgetown had three players score in double figures in a 62-52 win at American University on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas won their fourth-straight game and have now won seven of their last eight games. The Hoyas' defense held American to just 37 percent shooting from the floor and held the opposition under 60 points for the fourth-consecutive game.

Sophomore Lesley Walker (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) had a solid all-around game. She scored a season-best 13 points, handed out five assists, grabbed five rebounds and made four steals. Junior Katie Smrcka-Duffy (Sterling, Va./James Madison) had 19 points to lead the team. Junior Porshia Jones (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale) sparked the Hoyas off the bench. Jones was 4-for-7 from the floor and had 11 points.

The Hoyas led the entire second half, but the Eagles (6-3) cut the deficit to two at 54-52 with 2:05 to play. That was as close as they would come as Georgetown held the Eagles off the board the rest of the way.

The Hoyas, now 7-3 on the season, will be off until December 30, when they play at Duke. The Blue Devils are the 18th-ranked team in the nation. It will be the beginning of a stretch where Georgetown will play four-straight games against ranked teams. GU returns home on Jan. 4 to face top-ranked Connecticut and will then host #11 Notre Dame and #16 Rutgers.
