WASHINGTON, D.C.-- The Georgetown mens tennis team defeated cross-town rival George Washington 5-2 on October 8 in their first dual match of the season. The Hoyas were able to start the season with a victory behind strong performances in both singles and doubles.

The Hoyas secured the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. The #1 doubles team of Troy Crichlow (So., Wilton, Mass./Milton) and Dennis Cravedi (Fr., Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) fell to GWs Matt Hane and Drew Zamansky, 8-5. Georgetowns second and third doubles teams responded with victories. At #2 doubles, Hoya sophomores Marc Lohser (So., Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Jay Brupbacher (So., Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXII) posted an 8-5 victory over the Colonials Mike Melen and Nick Vickstrom, while Andre Benjamin (Jr., New York, N.Y./Fieldston) and Ken Jordan (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) defeated Brett Warner and Steve Cady in a #3 doubles thriller, pulling out a 9-8 (5) win.

The Hoyas built on their strong performance in doubles by capturing four of the six singles matches, ensuring a Georgetown victory. Georgetowns Nick Sklavounos (Jr., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) lead GWs Kevin Wright 7-5, 4-3, before Wright retired, resulting in a Georgetown victory at #1. Cravedi, in the #4 slot, beat Vickstrom in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Hoyas Benjamin and Jordan each added their second victory of the day at #5 and #6 singles, respectively. Benjamin defeated GWs Melen in a tight match, 7-6(5), 7-5, while Jordan cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Zamansky. Georgetowns two singles losses came at second and third singles. Lohser dropped a three set battle to the Colonials Hane at #2 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. At #3 singles, Crichlow fell to Kinzie Wright, 6-4, 6-3.

Georgetown's next match will be on Saturday, October 14, against UMBC on the first day of the Baltimore Washington Challenge. Competition begins at 11:00 a.m. at Georgetowns McDonough tennis courts.
