WASHINGTON, D.C.-- The Georgetown University womens tennis team competed in the D.C. Metro Championships October 6-9. The championship featured both singles and doubles matches, which were held at Georgetown and American University.
Georgetown freshman Anne Thompson (Fr., Newtown, Pa./Council Rock), competing in the singles B draw advanced to the final day of competition. In her first match, Thompson rolled to a straight set victory over George Washingtons Ashly Lucia, 6-1,6-3. On Saturday, Thompson received a victory by default over GWs Sam Fisher, thus earning a spot in the B flights main draw semifinals. Thompson lost to Howard Universitys Kim Strickland 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
The Hoyas Hadley Muckerman (So., St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and Kim Wattrick (So., Grosse Point Farms, Mich./University Liggett) also posted victories in B flight singles competition. Muckerman defeated GWs Sunlen Miller, 6-1, 6-4, in her first match, before falling in her second round match to UMBCs Jana Karaskova, an eventual finalist, 6-2, 6-0. Wattrick battled to a 7-5, 6-4 victory over GWs Lisa Borromeo in her first match. In the second round Wattrick lost to Howards Ashleigh Woods, 6-1, 6-2. Georgetowns Julie Hom (Sr., Newton, Mass./Newton South) also competed in B flight singles. Hom fell in straight sets to GWs Jennifer Sunshine in her first match, 6-0, 6-3, and lost a three set heartbreaker in the back draw to UMBCs Karri Bielewicz, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
Two Hoya teams advanced to the semifinals in the doubles B flight. Lara Madonia (Fr., Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and Sarah White (So., Westwood, Mass./Milton) cruised to the semifinals by defeating GWs Ashly Lucia and Carolina Deutch-Garcia, 8-1, while Meredith Bumpass (So., Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Hawken School) and Thompson posted an 8-4 victory over GWs Miller and Borromeo to advance. Both teams lost in the semifinals. White and Madonia fell to UMBCs Anita Pushnapathan and Jana Karaskova, 8-2. Bumpass and Thompson lost to Howards Tanya Okpala and Kim Strickland, 8-0.
In A flight doubles competition, both Hoya teams were defeated in the main draw. Muckerman and Wattrick fell to Americans Lauren Martin and Regan Campbell, 8-1. Hom and Jordan Botjer (Fr., Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) lost to Howards Tiffany Speas and Ashleigh Woods, 8-1. Hom and Botjer were defeated in the back draw by GWs Tracy Wei and Nazli Genscoy, 8-6.
Four Hoyas participated in A flight singles action. White fell to UMBCs Anita Pushnapathan, 7-5, 6-1, while GWs Lindy First defeated the Hoyas Botjer, 6-3, 6-3. Madonia lost to UMBCs Karen Prangley, 6-1, 6-0, and Bumpass fell by the same count to UMBCs Nicole Russo.
Three of the four A flight backdraw matches saw Georgetown go up against the American Eagles, and the Eagles emerged victorious in all three contests. White fell to AUs Irina Bovina, 6-1, 6-1, while Botjer dropped a 6-2, 6-1 contest to the Eagles Regan Campbell. AU completed its sweep as Lourdes Riusech defeated Madonia, 6-2, 6-0. The other backdraw match saw Bumpass fall to GWs Katarina Statsny, 6-3,6-2.
The next stop for the Hoya women is the ECAC Championships October 13-15 in Princeton, New Jersey.
