Georgetown Womens Tennis Competes in ECAC Invitational

Princeton, N.J. -- The Georgetown University women's tennis team competed against the east coast's finest tennis programs this weekend at the ECAC Division I Invitational, held at Princeton University. Play began on Friday, October 13, and concluded on Sunday, October 15. The Hoyas played on Friday against the University of Pennsylvania, and on Saturday against Brown and West Virginia.

Georgetowns final match of the Invitational came Saturday afternoon against the West Virginia Mountaineers. West Virginia defeated Georgetown, 7-0. At #1 singles, the Hoyas Jordan Botjer (Fr., Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) fell to WVU's Helen Adams, 6-0, 6-4. Lara Madonia (Fr., Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) dropped a close match to Patricia Kempton at #2 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). At third singles, Meredith Bumpass (So., Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Hawken) was defeated by Anna Marie Underwood, 6-0, 6-0, while at fourth singles Kim Wattrick (So., Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) lost to Maria Binder by a count of 6-0, 6-3. At #5 singles, Julie Hom (Sr., Newton, Mass./Newton South) fell to Courtney Howell, 6-1, 6-1, while at the #6 spot WVU's Jennifer Watkins defeat Anne Thompson (Fr., Newton, Pa./Council Rock), 6-2, 6-1.

West Virginia took two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point and secured their 7-0 victory. The Hoyas second doubles team of Botjer and Hom garnered a victory. Botjer and Hom defeated the Mountaineers Underwood and Adams, 8-6, for the Hoyas lone victory in the match. The #1 doubles team of Caroline Marshall (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) and Wattrick fell to Kempton and Howell, 8-2, while at third doubles Bumpass and Thompson were defeated by WVU's Binder and Watkins, 8-5.

Earlier in the day the Hoyas competed against the Ivy League Brown Bears and fell, 7-0. Brown swept both the singles and doubles matches. At #1 singles, Botjer fell to Victoria Beck, 6-2, 6-1. Madonia, at #2 singles, dropped her match to Heather Young, 6-1, 6-0. The Bears' Bridget Barbera defeated Bumpass at third singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Maria Elena del Valle defeated Wattrick at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4. At #5 singles, Hom lost to Priscilla Zeff by a score of 6-4, 6-2, and at #6 singles, Thompson fell to Irene Adsuar, 6-2, 6-3.

The Bears continued their winning ways in the doubles competition. At first doubles, Browns Beck and Adsuar defeated Georgetowns team of Botjer and Hom, 8-5. The Hoyas #2 doubles team of Bumpass and Thompson dropped a close match to the Bears' Barbera and Zeff, 7-6 (7-5), while the third doubles team of Wattrick and Madonia fell to Brown's Laruen Cheung and del Valle, 8-0.

Georgetowns toughest match of the tournament came on Friday, when the Hoyas faced off against the mighty Penn Quakers, the eventual runners-up of the Invitational. The Quakers defeated the Hoyas, 7-0, on their way to the finals. Botjer was defeated by Sanela Kunovac at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Madonia, at #2 singles, fell to Shubha Srinivasan, 6-2, 6-1. Penn's Louani Bascara beat Bumpass at #3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while the Quaker's Nicole Ptak defeated Wattrick, 6-0, 6-1 at #4. Hom fell to Rochelle Rais at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Anne Thompson lost her match at #6 singles to Jolene Sloat, 6-0, 6-1.

Penn took all three doubles matches from the Hoyas to win the doubles point and an overall 7-0 victory. Botjer and Hom played together at first doubles and fell to Penns Raiss and Kunovac, 8-0. Georgetowns second doubles team of Bumpass and Thompson lost to Rachel Shweky and Ptak, 8-0. Finally, Penns duo of Bascara and Srinivasan defeated the Hoyas Wattrick and Madonia by a count of 8-1.

Georgetown's women's tennis team hosts Towson this Saturday, October 21, at 12 noon on the McDonough Tennis Courts.
