Georgetown University's mens tennis team competed in the Baltimore-Washington Challenge this past weekend. On Saturday, October 14, the Hoyas lost to UMBC at home by a score of 5-2 and on Sunday GU beat Towson, 7-0 in Towson, Md.
Georgetown started strong against the Towson Tigers on Sunday, sweeping the doubles competition in route to a 7-0 overall victory. At #1 doubles Marc Lohser (So., Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Nick Sklavanous (Jr., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) turned in an 8-5 win over Bryan Rowland and Trey Regase. Andre Benjamin (Jr., New York, N.Y./Fieldston) and Ken Jordan (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) played in the #2 doubles spot for the Hoyas and won 8-2 over Chris Rowland and Andrew Davis. The #3 duo of Troy Crichlow (So., Wilton, Mass./Milton) and Dennis Cravedi (Fr., Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 score over Josh Hamilton and Matt Shore.
The Hoyas continued their great play by dropping only one set in singles. At #1 Sklavanous played his way to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over B. Rowland. In the #2 slot Lohser served and volleyed the entire match and won 6-1, 4-1, ret. Against Regase. Crichlow dropped only two games in at #3, finishing the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hamilton. Freshman Cravedi played at #4 and won a close battle with Gary Diamond, 6-4, 6-3. GU's Benjamin stroked the ball well and beat C. Rowland, 6-3, 6-1 at #5. Jordan rounded out the Georgetown victory by defeating Shore, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at #6 singles.
On Saturday Georgetown faced off with UMBC and lost the match, 5-2. The Hoyas two wins came in singles play, with victories by sophomores Marc Lohser and Troy Crichlow. Lohser, playing in the #2 position, defeated UMBCs Mikhail Kouznetsov in a close match by a score of 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (3). Meanwhile, the #3 Crichlow beat Eric Nudo in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The Hoyas #1 player, junior Nick Sklavanous, fell to Nikhail Misra, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Also, freshman Dennis Cravedi lost to Dimitri Bondar at the #4 spot, 7-5, 6-2, and #5 junior Andre Benjamin lost to Mark Carducci, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Ken Jordan was defeated by Vincent Granito at #6 by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, the Hoyas won at the #1 position while losing at #2 and #3 to the Retrievers. Sklavanous and Lohser won 8-3 over UMBCs Misra and Kouznetsov. The other matches featured Benjamin and Jordan losing 8-5 at #2 and Crichlow and Cravedi falling 8-3 at #3.
The Hoyas 2000 fall dual match record now stands at 2-1. Georgetowns next match will take place at Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Saturday, October 21.
