Hoyas Win Again in Hawaii

HONOLULU -- The Hoyas advanced to the Hawaii-Pacific Thanksgiving Classic finals, defeating the College of Charleston on 11/25/00 by a score of 79-68. Freshman Mike Sweetney again paced the team's scoring with 19 points, leading a quintent of Hoyas in double figures which included Kevin Braswell (16 ), Gerald Riley (14), Wesley Wilson (12) and Demetrius Hunter (10). Gerald and Wesley paced GUs rebounding as each pulled down 8 caroms.

After a 6-6 tie at the 17:24 mark, the Hoyas trailed through most of the first half. Although they never fell behind by more than eight, it took until the 1:10 mark for the Hoyas to get back to even. At the intermission the Hoyas trailed by one, 32-33.

In the second frame the Hoyas woes continued. Falling behind by as many as nine, GU surged back repeatedly but were unable to get in the plus column until 6:55 remained. The Hoyas defense, which did not allow a field goal for 9 minutes and 16 seconds (between 10:38 and 01:22) was then joined by the offensive effort as GU took the lead for good. Evenly distributed scoring and free throw shooting gave Georgetown a final lead of 11, 79-68.

"We got a great effort from our new people," said Coach Esherick," Mike did very well, Gerald grabbed rebounds and Wesley gave us a great effort coming off the bench. The College of Charleston is a very good team, I feel they are an NCAA tournament team and they had us sweating. We may not get a lot of credit for this win, but among coaches this is the kind of game that tells a lot about a team. I was nervous a few times there, but I'm happy with the result."

For the game the Hoyas won the battle of the boards 43-25. The Hoyas shot .491 while holding the Cougars to .408
