Washington, D.C. (Nov. 6) - The Georgetown Hoyas women's basketball team defeated EOS Malvas of Sweden in an exhibition game, 59-46, on Nov. 6.
Senior Katie Smrcka-Duffy (Sterling, Va./James Madison) led the Hoyas with 15 points and freshman Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) added 12 points and 12 rebounds in the team's only tune-up before opening the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 11).
Georgetown scored nine-straight points to open up a 16-7 lead and never trailed again. The Hoyas held EOS Malvas to just 18 points and forced 19 turnovers in the first half. Smrcka-Duffy and Joi Irby (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) each had seven points in the first 20 minutes of play.
Smrcka-Duffy, a preseason Second Team All-BIG EAST selection, added six rebounds, six steals and six assists. Brunson was equally impressive in her first game as a Hoya. She was 6-for-9 from the floor and added four steals and two blocks. Senior Porshia Jones (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale) chipped in with eight points.
The Hoyas open the 2000-2001 season in the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament on Saturday night. GU will host James Madison at 7:30 p.m. in McDonough Arena.
