Georgetown Holds Off Louisville, 70-63

    Georgetown (6-0) maintained their unbeaten streak on 12/5/00, defeating Louisville (2-4) 70-63 at Freedom Hall. Mike Sweetney and Demetrius Hunter paced the Hoyas' scoring with a dozen apiece while Nathaniel Burton added 11. Ruben Boumtje Boumtje led GU's rebounders with 9 boards while Sweetney, Burton and Wesley Wilson each contributed 8 caroms. Kevin Braswell paced both teams in assists and steals with 9 and 4, respectively.

    Georgetown opened with an 11-1 run and led by as many as 23 (34-11 01:14) in the first frame. At intermission the Cardinals trailed by 19, 15-34.

    The crowd of 18,586 at Freedom Hall and the national audience watching on ESPN saw more competition in the second half as Louisville nearly doubled their first half shooting percentage. The Cardinals got the crowd into the game as they cut into the Hoyas lead with an 18-10 run. When, after a few exchanges the Georgetown bulge had been reduced to 10, the Hoyas ran off 7 unanswered points to quiet the crowd. Although Louisville cut the lead to as few as 4 (58-62 01:54) the Hoyas answered with an 8-5 run for a 70-63 final.

    For the game the Hoyas outrebounded the Cardinals 58-38. Georgetown shot 35.9% while holding Louisville to 31.0%. Coach Esherick said "This was a great win for us. Louisville has a great program and this is a very tough place to play. I'm proud that the team didn't quit when Kevin fouled out. This is a game we wouldn't have won last year, but we got some real help from the guys coming off the bench. This game was significant."
