Hoyas Fall to Syracuse in Women's Basketball, 75-62

SYRACUSE, NY (Feb. 12) -- Junior Katie Smrcka-Duffy led Georgetown with 23 points and five rebounds but it wasn't enough as Georgetown fell to BIG EAST rival Syracuse, 75-62 at Manley Field House on Feb. 12.

Smrcka-Duffy also added five steals for the Hoyas (13-9, 6-5) who went on a 9-2 run to cut the Syracuse lead to 42-40 with 14:11 remaining.

Sophomore Jaime James (Plymouth, MA) scored 20 points to lead the Orangewomen. Leading by two with 7:14 remaining, the Orangewomen (10-11, 3-7) went on a 12-5 run to take their biggest lead of the first half, 28-19, with 2:59 remaining. Junior Leigh Aziz (Auburn, NY), who capped off the run with a layup, scored seven points in the first half to lead Syracuse to a 32-25 halftime lead.

The Orangewomen increased their lead to nine in the first three minutes of the second half before Georgetown (13-9, 6-5) went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 42-40 with 14:11 remaining. Syracuse responded with a 13-2 scoring run to increase its lead to 55-42 with 9:15 remaining. The Orangewomen maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 18 points with 3:35 remaining in the game.

James was one of three Orangewomen to finish in double digits in scoring. Katie Smrcka-Duffy led Georgetown with 23 points and five rebounds, and Lesley Walker added 12 points and five assists.

The Orangewomen will be back in action on Tuesday when they host No. 10/11 Rutgers at Manley Field House at 7:00 p.m.
