Hoyas Play Tough, But Fall To Local Rival Maryland

Georgetown faced local rival Maryland on February 20, at the Terrapin Indoor Tennis Bubble in College Park, MD. The Hoyas fought hard but fell 6-1 to the Terps.

The Hoyas were quickly ousted in the No. 1 doubles match as freshman Troy Crichlow (Wilton, Mass./Milton) and Marc Lohser (Fr., Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) were downed 8-4 by Maryland's Peter Harjes and Luan Nguyen. At No. 3 doubles, Dave Boyer (Sr., Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Ken Jordan (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) fell behind 3-6 but rallied to save match points against Jon Murchison and Dan Kenshalo and eventually claimed their match 9-7.

Teamed together for the first time at No. 2 doubles, the team of Beau Brewer (Sr., Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) and Nick Sklavounos (So., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) found themselves with the lead, but were unable to hold onto it as Larry Chou and Chris Chiu rallied to win in a tiebreaker 9-8(1).

Maryland started the singles competition very confidently, buoyed by the 1-0 lead generated by winning the doubles competition. The Terps took quick leads at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Sklavounos was the first Hoya to fall in singles as he lost to Chou 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. Crichlow fought back bravely after his slow start, but fell to Murchison 6-1, 7-5. Jordan turned his match around after dropping the first set 6-3, but he was unable to sustain his momentum after winning the second set and fell to Harjes 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. The match was clinched as Maryland had won their fourth team point.

The Hoyas however continued to battle, particularly as their captain Brewer took the court. He played an inconsistent first set, dropping that one to Nguyen 6-4. He claimed the second set, 6-4, by winning the final three games after falling behind 4-3. He finally succeeded in taking the third set tiebreaker by a 7-5 score to get the Hoyas first and only win on the day.

The Terp's Chui downed Lohser, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, and freshman Kris Grajny (Slingerlands, N.Y./Hotchkiss) concluded his match, a 6-2, 6-4 defeat, at the hands of Kenshalo. Following the 6-1 defeat at Maryland's hands, the Hoyas record for the season now stands at 2-6.

Next up for the Georgetown men is a BIG EAST battle as GU hosts Connecticut on February 27 beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the Montclair Country Club.
