WASHINGTON D.C. (April 10, 2000) -- Georgetown defeated Duke University in varsity competition, while Boston University won three races from GU in women's rowing competition on Saturday, April 8, on the Potomac River.

Despite a strong headwind, racing began on the Potomac against Duke University. In the Varsity 8+, Georgetown had open water on the Duke team by the 500 meter mark, then continued to lengthen their lead throughout the race. The Hoyas finished the race in time of 7:10.39 compared to Duke's 7:32.83.

Duke had no 2nd Varsity 8+ squad, so the GU 2V8+ rowed in the Novice 8+ event, along with DU's 2nd Novice. In the combined event, the Blue Devils Novice 8+ easily bested the field, leading from start to finish, and clocked in at 7:03.50. Georgetown's 2V8+ was second with a time of 7:25.19.

Against BU, the tide on the Potomac turned into the increasing headwind making parts of the racecourse unrowable. As the 2nd Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+, and Novice 8+ raced into increasingly difficult conditions, the course was shortened from the usual 2000 meters to 1750 meters. Despite the bad conditions, the Terriers won all three races from GU by an average of almost 20 seconds. The Varsity 8+, scheduled to be the last event of the day, was cancelled.

Georgetown's Novice Lightweight women were scheduled to race in the Villanova Lightweight Invitational in Camden, N.J. on Sunday, April 9, however, the regatta was cancelled due to unrowable conditions. The Hoyas women's crew team will be in action again on Saturday, April 15, at the George Washington Invitational Regatta.
