Hoyas Lose To Beltway Rival UMBC

The men's tennis team's match at UMBC on Wednesday, April 5, closely resembled their recent outings against American, South Carolina State, Duquesne and George Mason. The Hoyas had good opportunities to do a lot of damage but were unable to convert them to victories. The final outcome was UMBC 5, Georgetown 2. Georgetown's overall record stands at 3-17.

The Hoyas' doubles tandems took the court to begin the match. Leading the way was the #3 team of Dave Boyer (Sr., Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Ken Jordan (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), who went out to a 5-2 lead and were cruising, but then lost their momentum and fell 8-5. In a tight match at #1 doubles, Beau Brewer (Sr., Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) and partner Marc Lohser (Fr., Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) were converting break points but not holding serve. They came through with a serve break and hold at 6-6 and won the match 8-6. Nick Sklavounos (So., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and Andre Benjamin (So., New York, N.Y./Fieldston) started slowly and fell 8-3 at #2 doubles.

Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Hoyas began the singles matches. Troy Crichlow (Fr., Wilton, Mass./Milton) came through with a big win at #3 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Benjamin also found his rhythm, and won 6-1, 7-5 at #5 singles. Sklavounos fell at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Jordan was beaten 6-1, 6-0 at #6 singles. Lohser started hitting his returns in the second set but he lost the match in a second set tiebreak 6-3, 7-6(5). Brewer's match was much closer than indicated by the score. He fell 6-1, 6-3 at #4 singles.
