Georgetown Ties Columbia, 2-2

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 21, 2000) -- The Georgetown University women's soccer team tied Columbia University, 2-2. The Hoyas, who had won their last three games, are now 4-3-1.

The first half was played evenly by both teams. Columbia scored first as Lauren Papalia netted a goal at 14:09. Georgetown freshman midfielder Jen Choiniere (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scored her third goal of the season at 37:09 to knot the game at one. Junior defender Alyson Smith (Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) got the assist when she took a free kick that Choiniere headed into the net. At halftime the score was tied at one.

Although the Hoyas controlled the ball most of the second half, at 79:43 Meredith Corkery scored for the Lions. However, Georgetown did not waste time, and at 80:47, senior midfielder Natalie Giugno (Milwaukee, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) connected on a pass from senior midfielder Liz Delgado (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley). At the end of regulation, the game was tied at two.

Georgetown held the ball for the majority of the overtime. The Hoyas had two near goals in the second overtime period. Sophomore forward Karin Ostrander (Atherton, Calif./Menlo Atherton School) had a beautiful shot that the goalkeeper had to punch over the goal to save. Delgado also had a great shot that hit the crossbar. Neither team could connect in overtime, and at the end of the game, the score remained 2-2.

In her first start of the year, Hoya goalkeeper Shereena Chang (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) had seven saves. Janine Ierardi had eight saves for Columbia.

The Hoyas will be in action against their first BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic opponent as they play at Rutgers University on Sunday, September 24, at 1 p.m.
