WASHINGTON, D.C. The Georgetown University womens soccer team was defeated, 5-4, by James Madison University on Tuesday, September 26. The Hoyas, who were unbeaten in their five previous games, are now 4-4-2 overall.
Georgetown got on the board first, as freshman Jen Choiniere (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) was able to convert a corner kick by junior Alyson Smith (Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) at 19:20. Freshman Jessie Beers-Altmann (State College, Pa./State College Area) scored next for the Hoyas off a pass from freshman Alyssa Conlow (Allentown, N.J./Hamilton). At 40:20, Beers-Altmann beat the Dukes goalkeeper to net her first career goal. Although Georgetown only took three shots in the first half, they led 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, James Madison quickly turned things around. Marisa Lemme scored for the Dukes at 47:51, and less than three minutes later, Christy Metzker knotted the game at two. Georgetown junior Liza Rojas-Alford (Minnetonka, Minn.//Minnetonka) regained the lead for the Hoyas just over two minutes later. At 52:34, Rojas-Alford netted her first goal of the season on a beautifully placed shot in the upper right-hand corner of the goal.
The Dukes then answered with three straight goals. Metzker completed a hat trick, scoring her second goal of the night at 58:49, and converting again at 78:44. Beth Burgess scored at 84:57, putting James Madison ahead, 5-3.
The Hoyas played hard until the end, and with less than three minutes left in the game, junior Kelly Haden (San Marino, Calif./Polytechnic School) closed the gap to 5-4, when she connected on a pass from Smith.
Georgetown junior Shereena Chang (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) had three saves in her second start of the season.
The Hoyas will be in action again as they host UNC-Wilmington on Friday, September 29, at 4 p.m. on Harbin Field.
