The Hoya women lost their opening match of the season to the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, September 30, 5-4, on the first day of the Baltimore-Washington Challenge. Georgetown held a 2-1 lead after the initial doubles matches, but the Hoyas were only able to win two of the six singles matches.

Georgetown won two of the three doubles matches to start the day, as the Hoyas #1 doubles team of Hadley Muckerman (So., St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and Kim Wattrick (So., Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) defeated UMBCs tandem of Nicole Russo and Kerri Bielewicz, 8-5, while Julie Hom (Sr., Newton, Mass./Newton South) and Jordan Botjer (Fr., Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) rolled to an 8-1 victory over Karen Prangley and Carolyn Vamasiri at #3 doubles. UMBC was able to avoid a doubles sweep by winning at #2 doubles, as the Retrievers duo of Anita Pushnapathan and Jana Karaskova defeated Georgetowns Meredith Bumpass (So., Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Hawken School) and Anne Thompson (Fr., Newton, Pa./Council Rock) by a count of 8-1.

The Hoyas posted a 2-4 record in singles matches for the day. Georgetowns two victories came at #4 and #6 singles. At #4 singles, the Hoyas Sarah White (So., Westwood, Mass./Milton) defeated Kerri Bielewicz in two close sets, 7-5, 7-5, while Hadley Muckerman posted her second win of the day in cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over UMBCs Carolyn Vamasiri at #6 singles. The Retrievers posted victories in the other singles matches. Nicole Russo defeated GUs Botjer at #1 singles, 6-3,6-2. At #2 singles, Anita Pushnapathan handed Lara Madonia (Fr., Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) a 6-1, 6-2 defeat. Bumpass suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss at #3 singles, falling to UMBCs Karen Prangley. Finally, at #5 singles, the Retrievers Jana Karaskova beat Georgetowns Wattrick, 6-0, 6-0.

The Hoya women look to rebound in day two of the Baltimore-Washington Challenge, when they go up against the Loyola Greyhounds in Fairfax, Va. on October 1, 2000.
