Blacksburg, Va. (January 24, 2001)-- Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md.) scored a career-high 28 points as Georgetown defeated Pittsburgh in the Steel City, 76-56. Brunson, who had 17 of her 28 points in the second half, made 12 of her 16 shots from the floor and was perfect in four attempts from the free-throw line. She also grabbed eight rebounds in the game.
Pittsburgh scored the final four points of the first half and trailed by just three at halftime, 30-27. The game remained close until the Hoyas went on an 18-1 run to seal the contest. The Georgetown defense held the Panthers without a field goal for more than six minutes. GU shot 57 percent from the floor in the second half and held Pittsburgh to just 28 percent shooting in the game's final frame.
Katie Smrcka-Duffy added 18 points for the Hoyas. Zsuzsanna Horvath had her best game of the season for GU. She scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds, handed out six assists and blocked three shots. The sophomore made seven of her eight field- goal attempts.
The Hoyas improved to 11-7 overall with the victory. They are 3-4 in BIG EAST play. GU hosts Providence at McDonough Arena on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m.
