Men's Tennis Falls to GWU

10/18/2001

The men's tennis team, only days removed from an undefeated weekend at the Towson Invitational, fell in a closely contested match to local rival George Washington. The final match score was Georgetown-2, George Washington-5.

In the doubles competition that began the team match, the Hoyas were in very good shape to take the early team lead until GW made a last minute recovery in each of the three matches. At #1 doubles the Hoya team of Marc Lohser (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Dennis Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) served with a 6-5 lead. Their opponents, Matt Hane and Jake Jopling won the next three games, breaking serve twice to win 8-6. At #2 doubles the Hoya team of Aaron Shumaker (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Philips Exeter Academy) and Erik Bildman (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin School) served with a 5-4 lead. Their GW opposition, Kevin Wright and Matt Treadgold, broke serve twice and held twice to win 8-5. The only source of Hoya solace was at #3 doubles where Hoyas Nick Sklavounos (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and Ken Jordan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) built a 7-3 lead before closing out an 8-6 win over Mike Melen and Brett Warner.

GW earned the team point awarded for the doubles competition with a stirring comeback and the Hoyas hoped to avert that momentum with a strong showing in singles. But GW quickly built on their lead as Hoya #3 Andre Benjamin (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) fell to Jopling 6-4,6-1. Bildman aided the Hoya cause with a solid 6-3,6-2 win over Melen at #5 singles. Then, unfortunately, things went bad for the Hoyas as they lost three set matches at #1, #4 and #6 singles. Shumaker fell 6-2,4-6,6-0 to Treadgold at #4 singles. Lohser fell 3-6,6-2,6-0 to Hane at #1 singles, clinching the win for GW. Sklavounos fell 2-6,6-2,6-2 to Warner at #6 singles. The only Hoya to win a closely contested singles match on the day was Cravedi who defeated Wright 7-6(8),6-4 at the #2 position.

Next up for Georgetown is a individual tournament at West Point, NY where the Hoyas will compete in the Army Invitational this Friday, Saturday and Sunday along with teams from Rutgers, St. John's, St. Bonaventure, Lehigh, Cornell and Marist.
