The Hoya men's tennis team traveled to West Point, NY this weekend to compete in the Army Invitational held at the Lichtenberg Indoor Tennis Center located on the post at the US Military Academy.
The Hoyas received solid performances in individual singles matches against many of the top players from Rutgers, St. John's, Marist, Cornell, Army, St. Bonaventure and Lehigh. There was no team scoring at this event.
The Hoyas were led by senior co-captain Ken Jordan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier ) who reached the C Draw Consolation Final with victories over opponents from Marist and Lehigh before falling in the final to Chiporuka of St. John's 4-6,6-3,6-2.
Also performing well for the Hoyas were freshmen Aaron Shumaker (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Philips Exeter Academy) and Ryan Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day School). Both reached the semifinal round of singles in the main draw - Shumaker in the C Flight, Peisel in the D Flight.
Other Hoyas who recorded singles victories in the tournament included senior co-captain Andre Benjamin (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) in the B Flight, sophomore Dennis Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) in the A Flight, and freshman Erik Bildman (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin School ) in the B Flight.
The Hoyas will now conclude their 2001 competitions at the ITA Regional Singles and Doubles Championships at Princeton University beginning Saturday October 27.
