Georgetown opened its season at the MCI center on 11/26/01, defeating the Tigers (this time of Grambling) by a score of 103-69. Wesley Wilson paced all scorers with a career high 23 points and all rebounders with a career high 13 rebounds for his second double-double as a Hoya. Victor Samnick also scored his second double-double as a Hoya, pouring in a career high tying 18 points and pulling down 11 caroms. Tri-Captain Courtland Freeman, the third Hoya with a double-double (his first) scored a career high 12 points and grabbed 10 boards while fighting off a cold. Additionally, Kevin Braswell scored 20 points and Gerald Riley added 18.
Despite the absence of scoring leader Mike Sweetney, sidelined by a strained left achillies, the Hoyas shot 48.6% in the first frame while holding the Tigers to 33.3% from the field. At the intermission Georgetown led 49-30.
In the second half the Hoyas continued to pound the ball inside on offense and apply pressure on defense. Georgetown forced 21 turnovers and made 13 steals while Grambling?s numbers were 14 and 8. Georgetown won the battle of the boards 48-40.
In the post game press conference Coach Esherick spent so much time on injury updates that in the interest of brevity he was forced to turn the discussion to his healthy players. All seven of them.
