The Georgetown Men?s Basketball team won their second exhibition game on 11/8/01, defeating the New Zealand Select Team 87-53. Victor Samnick scored his second exhibition double-double, leading all scorers with 15 points and all rebounders with 13 boards. Gerald Riley contributed 13 points Kevin Braswell added 11 and Michael Sweetney, Wesley Wilson and Drew Hall each scored 10. Wesley Wilson had 5 blocks, and Kevin Braswell dished out 8 assists.
After performing an opening Haka (traditional Maori warrior dance) the New Zealanders were quiet for the next 11 minutes as the Hoyas built a 33-0 lead. By intermission the differential stood at 36, 50-14.
In the second stanza the scoring was more balanced as New Zealand improved their shooting percentage from 12.1% (4-13) to 43.8% (14-32). Their game total was 27.7% (18-65). The Hoyas also improved their percentage from 50.0% (18-36) to 53.3% (16-30). Their game total was 51.5% (34-66).
For the game the Hoyas won the battle of the boards 47-41, and forced 24 turnovers while giving up 16. Most significant of all perhaps, the Hoyas had 22 assists for 34 field goals, demonstrating selfless team play.
The Hoyas open their regular season on Friday November 16 when they face Marymount at McDonough Arena at 7:30.
