WASHINGTON, DC (Dec. 5) -- The Georgetown Hoyas sprinted out to an eight-point lead in the first three minutes and never looked back, defeating George Washington 78-57. Sophomore Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) shot 19 of 20 from the charity stripe and scored a career high 29 points to lead the Hoyas. GU improved its record to 5-1 on the season.
Georgetown opened up a 17-point halftime lead using an up-tempo offense and an aggressive switching defense. GW shot 8-35 from the field in the first half and 0-10 from three-point land. Georgetown meanwhile went 10-26 from the field and a superb 18-21 from the free throw line, led by Brunson's 13-14 from the stripe. Shawntese Charles (Washington, D.C./St. John's H.S.) grabbed eight rebounds in the first half, limiting GW's second chance points.
The second half saw GW whittle the Georgetown lead to 10 points early in the second half. GU never let the lead dip below double digits though, relying on clutch shooting from freshman point guard Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall). Lisicky shot 4-6 from three-point land in the second half and finished the game with a new career high 21 points. GW made a last run at the Hoyas with 4:30 left, cutting the lead to 11 but free throws down the stretch by Lisicky, Brunson and senior captain Lesley Walker (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) sealed the Hoya victory.
Georgetown's Walker scored 15 points on the day and had eight assists to join Brunson and Lisicky in the double digit-scoring column. Erica Lawrence's 15 points led the Colonials. GU shot 40.4% (21-52) for the game compared to GW's 34.4% (21-61). There were a total of 41 fouls called in the game and both teams combined for 39 turnovers.
GU will next host nationally ranked Duke on Saturday, December 9, at 4:00 p.m.
