Washington, D.C. (Dec. 8, 2001) -- Georgetown's Nok Duany (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington High) hit a jumper with 14:33 to play to cut #11/9 Duke's lead to 10 but Duke turned around and went on a 13-0 run to go up by 23 and seal the game, winning 89-54. Six Duke players scored in double digits while Lesley Walker (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) who scored 21 led the Hoyas. The Hoyas drop to 5-2 on the season and Duke improves to 7-2.
In the first half the Hoyas fought off leading scorer Rebekkah Brunson's (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) foul trouble. With 3:15 to go in the half GU was down two, 31-33, with the ball. Mary Lisicky's (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) three point shot went in and out, which would have given the Hoyas their first lead of the game. Instead Duke closed the half with seven straight points, four from freshman Monique Currie, to lead 40-31 at the break.
The second half started off with both teams trading baskets for the first five minutes but then Duke went on the 13-0 run to open up a 23-point lead and the Blue Devils never looked back. GU turned the ball over nine times in the second half and Duke shot five for eight from three-point land.
Brunson was the only other Hoya besides Walker with double digits in the scoring column, posting 10 points. Duke's Currie led the six double-digit Blue Devil scorers with 17, Alana Beard had 16, Iciss Tillis scored 13, Wynter Whitley put up 11 and both Sheana Mosch and Michele Matyasovsky had 10 apiece. For the game GU shot 37.1% and Duke shot 55.2%.
Duke outrebounded the Hoyas 45 to 22. Leading the board work for Duke was Mosch with 10 giving her a double double for the game. GU's Duany led the Hoyas with five rebounds, followed by Brunson and Shawntese Charles (Washington, D.C./St. John's H.S.) with four each.
