The Georgetown University women’s tennis team fell to host James Madison this Saturday, 5-0, in Bridegwater, Va. The match was played indoors and under the 4 +1 format, with each of the four singles matches and the lone doubles match being worth one point. With the loss, the Hoyas fell to 2-9 in dual matches in 2000-01.
The Hoyas’ strongest performance came in the doubles match. Georgetown’s tandem of junior Caroline Marshall (Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) and sophomore Hadley Muckerman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) pushed the Dukes’ Christy Michaux and Sarah Granson to a tie breaker but ultimately fell, 9-8. The Dukes’ duo took the tiebreaker by a score of 7-3.
James Madison, behind a strong effort at all four positions, swept the Hoyas in singles competition. At # 1 singles, Georgetown freshman Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) fell to JMU’s Sheri Puppo, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was defeated at # 2 singles by Laruen Dalton, 6-2, 6-2. At # 3 singles, senior Julie Hom (Newton, Mass./Newton South) fell to JMU’s Elizabeth Simon, 6-1, 6-0; while at # 4 singles, Hoya senior Lindsey Manwell lost by a score of 6-1,6-2, to the Dukes’ Margie Zesinger.
The Hoyas return to action on Saint Patrick’s Day, when they will host the Saint John’s Red Storm in a BIG EAST dual match. The time for the match has yet to be announced.
