Coral Gables, Fla. (February 4, 2001)-- The Miami Hurricanes scored the final six points of the game to defeat Georgetown, 52-46. The Hoyas, who trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, were held scoreless for the final 1:21. GU's record fell to 13-8 overall and 5-5 in BIG EAST play. Miami improved to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) led Georgetown with 17 points and 12 rebounds. It was her third consecutive double-double and ninth of the season, which leads the BIG EAST. Katie Smrcka-Duffy (Sterling, Va./James Madsion) added 11 points for the Hoyas. GU shot just 30 percent from the floor in the game and made just two of its 17 3-point attempts. The Hurricanes were 7-for-11 from long-range and outrebounded the Hoyas, 49-40.
Dalia Clarke scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Miami. She was 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Sheila James added 14 points.
Georgetown led by as many as nine in the first half, but the Hurricanes went on an 11-0 run to take a 26-21 lead with 5:07 left in the half before the Hoyas rallied to tie the game before intermission at 26-26.
Miami started strong in the second half with a 13-1 run to take a 39-27 lead. GU answered by scoring 11 unanswered points. However, UM's Clarke hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minutes of the game. The Hoyas were forced to foul and Miami was 3-for-6 in the final minutes to put the game away.
