Georgetown's first game ever at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda ended in defeat as the Hoyas fell to the Retrievers 9-2. The loss dropped the Hoyas to 0-7 for the season while UMBC picked up their second win of the year. Freshman right fielder
Carlos Gazitua (Miami, Fla. / Monsignor Pace) had two more hits raising his season average to a team-leading .391 while another freshman, catcher
Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven, N.Y./St. Anthony's), went 3-4 with two doubles.
Starting pitcher Matt Arizin (Philadelphia, Pa. / Penn Charter) lost for the second time this season while lasting five innings, striking out two, and giving up four runs. The top of the seventh proved costly as Georgetown's defense walked four and committed two errors as the Retrievers scored five more. Freshman Tim Nunziata (Ramsey, N.J. / Ramsey) closed the game holding the Retrievers scoreless over the final 2.1 innings. Nunziata has struck out two, walked one, and not allowed a run in his two appearances this season.
The Hoyas offense couldn't overcome the deficit as they managed just two runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore third baseman Tony Lee (Bromall, Pa. / Malvern Prep) led of with a single and then stole a team-leading third time this year. Matt Carullo (Oakton, Va. / Paul VI) knocked in Lee before scoring on Eric Santana's sacrifice fly.
The Hoyas will face George Washington (3/3), Navy (3/4), and George Mason (3/4) in the Capitol Classic Tournament this weekend in Greensboro, NC.
