BALTIMORE -- Senior midfielder Tom Tamberrino scored three goals and sophomore attackman Mike Hammer added a pair of goals and three assists as #4 Georgetown (5-0, 2-0) defeated #10 UMBC (3-1, 1-1), 11-5, in an ECAC Lacrosse League contest.
The Hoyas never trailed, with Tamberrino finally breaking a scoreless tie, converting a rebound with 9:38 elapsed in the first quarter. Georgetown struck for two quick goals early in the second quarter, as junior midfielder Steve Dusseau and Tamberrino scored at the 49-second and 1:13 marks respectively.
UMBC finally got on the board as freshman attackman Justin Smith converted a Charlie Gibson pass at the 6:09 mark. After Georgetown's Scott Doyle and Doug Mueller extended their lead to 5-1, Retriever freshman midfielder Pat Muston and Smith tallied with 19 seconds and 5 seconds to play at the end of the second quarter to cut the halftime deficit to 5-3.
But the Hoyas outshot UMBC, 13-2, in the third quarter and outscored them 3-0 to put the game away. Neal Goldman restored the GU lead to 6-3 just 41 seconds into the third, and Tamberrino and Hammer added goals to put Georgetown comfortably ahead heading into the final quarter.
Dusseau added two goals and an assist for Georgetown, and junior netminder Scott Schroeder was sharp, recording 12 saves in the game. Smith was UMBC's lone multiple-point man with a pair of goals and as assist. UMBC goalie Steve Cusa, allowing just 6.07 goals per game entering the contest, stopped 11 GU shots, while allowing 11 goals.
Georgetown has now defeated UMBC four straight times, after losing the first nine career meetings with the Retrievers.
