Georgetown's men's tennis team traveled to Fairfax, Va. and faced the Patriots of George Mason on Tuesday, March 20, 2001. The Hoyas came away with a 5-2 victory despite difficult weather conditions including stiff winds and a misty drizzle.

George Mason fielded a team of five players, so the match started with the Hoyas ahead 1-0 because of Mason's default at #6 singles. GU was unable to hold the lead during the doubles competition as both Hoya tandems fell to the Patriots and GMU claimed the doubles point. At #1 doubles GU's Andre Benjamin (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) and Troy Crichlow (Wilton, Mass./Milton) lost 8-5 to GMU's Landon Schaefer and Yannick Vuignier. In the #2 slot Hoyas' Ken Jordan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and Jay Brupbacher (So., Sparta, N.J./P. John XXII) were defeated by Chris Rivera and Frederico Mendez, 8-4.

In the singles competition with the match tied, 1-1, GU was able to pull away and won four out of the five matches. Mike Nelson (Trinidad & Tobago/Port-of-Spain), Jordan and Brupbacher all closed out their matches in quick fashion. Nelson won the decisive match at #3, 6-1, 6-2, and Jordan and Brupbacher both posted 6-2, 6-1 victories at #4 and #5 respectively. Crichlow battled at #2 singles against Vuignier and was the victor, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4. At #1 singles GU's Nick Sklavounos (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) was knocked off by GMU's Schaefer in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

The Hoyas next will travel to Villanova, Pa. to compete against BIG EAST rival Villanova on Saturday, March 24. Match time is set for 12 noon.
