Despite strong pitching performances by lefty Matt Arizin (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) and right-hander Kevin Field (Fr., Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), the Georgetown baseball team fell 3-1 and 6-2 to Rutgers on Saturday, March 31 at Shirley Povich Field. GU's record now stands at 8-19 for the season and 3-6 in the BIG EAST. Rutgers improved to 20-7 overall and 7-2 in the Conference.
Game 1's starter, Arizin, tossed a complete game striking out four while allowing just one run. In the second inning, Rutgers took advantage of two Hoya errors to take a 2-0 advantage. The Scarlet Knights increased their lead to 3-0 with another run in the sixth. With none out in the seventh loading, Georgetown loaded the bases on back-to-back hit batsmen and a single by Eric Santana (Sr., Santurce, P.R./Edgewood). Following a pop-up and a strike-out, Georgetown got on the board when Marc Carlini (Sr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) walked scoring Mike Green (Jr., McLean, Va./Landon School). The next batter flied out to center ending the game and any chance of a Hoyas comeback.
Field took the mound in the second game striking out four while allowing six runs over 8.1 innings. Georgetown followed Rutgers opening inning run with one of their own in the latter half of the box. Sophomore Jason Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed over to second by Green. Designated Hitter Robert O'Hare (So., San Jose, Calif./Mission College) singled to center bringing Boice around to tie the game at 1-1. The Scarlet Knights put three more on the board before the Hoyas trimmed the lead to 4-2 in the seventh. Rutgers centerfielder erred on a single by Green. RU sealed the 6-2 victory with two more runs in the top of the ninth.
The Hoyas will try to avoid the three-game sweep by the Scarlet Knights at 12:00 on Sunday, April 1, at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
