Georgetown (11-6, 2-3) lost at home on 1/19/02, dropping a 67-68 decision to Pittsburgh (16-3, 4-2). Mike Sweetney paced all scorers with 24 points, scoring 16 of 18 from the stripe. Tony Bethel added 14 points and led the team in rebounding with 5 boards.
A strange game from the outset, the Panthers led for the first 11 minutes, building a 9 point edge, only to see the Hoyas roar back to establish an 11 point lead of their own. The Hoyas then watched their edge evaporate in the final 2 minutes of the first frame as the Panthers scored 6 from the stripe and made a layup, cutting the Georgetown lead to 3, 32-29.
In the second frame Pittsburgh again dominated in the first 11 minutes, building a 17 point lead. The Hoyas, however, refused to surrender, and battled back with a 22-4 run which saw Georgetown in the lead (67-66) with 42 seconds remaining. Jaron Brown tipped in a missed 3 pointer by Brandon Knight to give Pittsburgh back the lead with 0:06 on the clock. Although the Hoyas Drew Hall got a good look at a 3 pointer, when it rattled out the horn sounded while the battle for the rebound was in progress.
For the game Georgetown shot 36.7% from the field while Pittsburgh shot 45.3%. Pittsburgh also won the battle of the boards 28-35.
