Hoyas Quiet Chanticleers, 87-60

12/2/2002

Georgetown opened December with a bang, defeating Coastal Carolina 87-60 on 12/02/02. All American Candidate Mike Sweetney paced all scorers with 26 points and all rebounders with 10 boards as he achieved his 24th double-double. That he hit 7 of 11 from the field and 12 of 15 from the stripe while making 4 steals, blocking 3 shots and dishing out a pair of assists is all the more impressive for his only seeing 26 minutes of action. Gerald Riley, who had led the Hoyas? scoring in the last two contests, contributed 11 points and led the team in steals with 5.

The Hoyas faced a tough battle through the first 12 and a half minutes of the game as the Chants refused to let the home team build a lead of double digits. Unfortunately, this forced Coastal Carolina to play very aggressively, drawing several whistles (6 in the first 4 minutes) which meant the Hoyas were at the stripe from 14:09 on. When the Hoyas ended the half with a 20-4 run, the visitors found themselves at the wrong end of a 45-25 halftime score.

In the second stanza Georgetown built its lead to as many as 34 on two occasions, but the Chanticleers chopped the final margin to 27, 87-60. For the game the Hoyas shot 52.7% while holding their opponents to 41.0%. The Hoyas lost the battle of the boards 28-40, but committed 16 fouls to Coastal Carolina?s 26. Georgetown also had 10 more steals, 5 more blocks and 10 fewer turnovers.
