Hoyas Turn Keydets, 85-48

12/31/2002 The Hoyas returned to their winning ways to close out 2002 with a 85-48 victory over VMI on New Year?s Eve. Mike Sweetney paced all scorers with 23 points, all rebounders with 9 boards and all shot-blockers with 5 rejections. Mike?s 22 minutes of playing time also included a pair of steals, an assist and a 13 of 15 performance from the stripe. Freshman Ashanti Cook set a personal best in scoring with 15 tallies, Wesley Wilson added 12 point and 8 boards. Gerald Riley rounded out the quartet of Hoyas in double figures with 11 points.

The Hoyas could not get away from the Keydets in the opening minutes as each lead was cut back before it could generate momentum. After 12 minutes, however, the Hoyas concentration and foul shooting took their toll on VMI, and an 18-5 run saw Georgetown take a 41-23 lead into the locker room at intermission. For the half the Hoyas shot 44.4% while holding VMI to 20.0%. The Hoyas also hit 15 of 16 from the charity stripe while their opponents hit 9 of 17.

 In the second stanza the Keydetts never came closer than 15 points, eventually losing by 37. 13 Hoyas saw action, including 10 who played 9 minutes or more. The Hoyas won the battle of the boards 52-43, forced 5 more turnovers (13-18) than they surrendered and shot 41.9% while holding VMI to 24.2% for the game. VMI missed a total of 50 shots.
