12/6/2002 At Georgetown University, we know that reading matters. In the spirit of the holiday season, we can share the gift of reading with youngsters in local tutoring and mentoring programs and in area schools. In addition, for the past three years, Georgetown has run an Angel Tree. The Angel Tree has descriptions of the reading wishes of area children in need. Faculty, staff and students select an Angel from the tree and buy a book for the child described on the Angel card.
This year, Head Coach Craig Esherick involved the Men?s basketball program in the Angel Tree effort. (Pictured-Tri Captain Courtland Freeman reviews donation selections with teammates and Coach Esherick)
Last holiday, more than 500 children received books from Georgetown Angels.
Some of the schools to receive Angel Tree books:
Lincoln Junior High, Columbia Heights
Marie Reed Elementary
Ross Elementary
J.O. Wilson Elementary, North Capitol
Immaculate Conception School, Shaw
St. Thomas More School
Van Ness Elementary, Anacostia
Deadline for contributions to Project Angel Tree 2002 is December 18.
