Women' Basketball Slips Past St. John'

Jamaica, N.Y. ?Georgetown University (12-12, 4-9) defeated the St. John?s University women?s basketball team 60-53, tonight at Alumni Hall. The Red Storm (3-22, 0-14) rebounded from a 22-point deficit at the 14:56 mark in the second half to pull within six, but just seventeen seconds remained in the game.

The Red Storm scored the first four points of the game, but the remainder of the half would belong to the Hoyas. Georgetown scored the next 10 points, led by Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill/Oxon Hill), who had six. SJU committed 10 fouls in the first segment, sending Georgetown to the line 16 times. The Hoyas connected on 11 free throws and entered halftime with a 32-19 advantage.

Georgetown took a 45-23 lead on a basket by Brunson at the 14:56 mark. The Red Storm responded by outscoring the Hoyas 30-15 during the final minutes of play. A free throw by freshman Patrycja Gulak pulled SJU to within 10 with 1:28 left to play. Sophomore Shemika Stevens got the ball to freshman Mary Pat Statler for a three with 32 seconds on the clock. The Red Storm would foul Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), who hit both, to give the Hoyas the 59-50 lead. Senior Kenyawna Hudgens would pull St. John?s to within six with a basket from behind the arc. Georgetown recorded one final free throw to seal the 60-53 win.

Brunson led Georgetown, recording 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Lisicky had 14 for the Hoyas, and Nok Duany (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) added 11 points and a game-high nine boards.

Georgetown will take to the court this Wednesday at home against Villanova at 8 p.m.
