On Wednesday, July 3rd, Charles Smith, former Georgetown University Hoyas and NBA player, will host a fundraiser basketball game at Georgetown University?s McDonough Arena. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. The game will feature the NYC Rucker Park All Stars vs. the D.C. Legends.
Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides intensive, community-based services to at-risk youth. The Washington, DC office currently serves 34 youth, ages 7 - 21, and their families in the metropolitan area, and has assisted hundreds of children and their families since it began in 1995.
?Most of the time when you hear about athletes,? says Smith, ?you hear something negative. This is an opportunity to do something positive, to give back to the community and help at-risk youth.?
Smith spends part of his time providing wraparound mentoring services, working with clients pf the Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. ?Mr. Smith has been a major asset to our program,? states DC Director Charlita Whitehead. ?He has been an inspiration and a source of excitement for our youth.?
Tickets are $10 in advance for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets will be more at the door. The half-time highlight will be the ?Slammin? from the Streets Dunk Contest.? The game will begin at 7:30 PM (doors open at 7:00).
