7/3/2002 Washington DC? Georgetown Men?s Basketball Head Coach Craig Esherick today updated the Hoya roster. Incoming Freshman Brandon Bowman, a 6-8, 190 lb. sharpshooter whose team won the California State Championship, and who signed an early letter of intent in November, may have help. Amadou Kilkenny-Diaw, a 6-8 215 lb. forward from St. Alban?s High School in DC averaged 11 pts, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. The National Merit Scholar and son of Rosemary Kilkenny-Diaw, a Special Assistant for Affirmative Action Policies to Georgetown University?s President, has announced that he plans to play for the Hoyas.
Additionally, Bowman?s teammate at USA Today #1 ranked Westchester High School, Ashanti Cook has been accepted at Georgetown University. Cook, a 6?3?, 165 lb. point-guard averaged 13 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Cook received a qualified release from his early letter of intent commitment to New Mexico after a coaching change there.
?We found this year with Drew [Hall] and Tony [Bethel] that having two freshmen from the same high school allows for an accelerated learning curve. I?d like to see Brendan and Ashanti adjust as quickly as Tony and Drew. I also think that their experience as champions will be valuable. They not only know how to play together, but how to win.?
?I should also point out that Harvey Thomas and I have decided that he would be better served spending some time at another school. He has elected to attend Daytona Beach Community College, where Lee Scruggs played. I understand he began classes there on Monday of last week.? Coach Esherick said.
Thomas, a 6?8?, 205 lb. Sophomore Forward from Hamilton, Tennessee, averaged 14.3 minutes, 5.2 points and 2.5 rebounds while playing in 28 games.
?I?ve made Victor Samnick and Mike Sweetney Co-captains with Courtland Freeman.? Said Coach Esherick. ?I?m looking at them to provide the team with leadership and stability. If they can inspire the team with the kind of work ethic and effort that they?ve demonstrated, I think we?ll do well.?
