Mike Sweetney Named to Wooden Preseason All American Team

August 5, 2002 Georgetown University Men?s Basketball player, junior forward Mike Sweetney has been selected to the 2003 Wooden Award Preseason All-American Team. The list names the top 50 returning collegiate players based on last season?s performance and is selected by sportswriters and sportscasters from around the country.

Georgetown Basketball?s Outstanding Player of the 2001-2002 season, Sweetney led the Hoyas in scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Sweetney also left his mark on the BIG EAST rankings earning first place in field goal percentage and second in rebounds. He notched 15 double-doubles during the season, including setting a BIG EAST scoring/rebound combination record with an impressive 35 point 20 rebound showing in Georgetown?s quadruple overtime game against Notre Dame. According to STATS, Inc, Sweetney also made the fourth greatest improvement in free throw shooting in the country in 2001-2002. He increased his 61.9% 2000-2001 mark by 19% to 81.4%. Sweetney?s postseason honors for last season include being named the to the All-District II Team and as the District II Player of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association, as well as a All BIG EAST 1st Team selection.

Being named to the list means Sweetney is considered a likely candidate for the award, named for former UCLA coach John Wooden. It is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball and will be awarded Sunday April 13, 2003 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
