HARRISONBURG, Va. - Georgetown (2-3-0) scored twice in 1:36 in the second half and went on to hand James Madison (3-1-1) a 3-0 loss in women's soccer Wednesday night. The win handed the Dukes their first loss of the season and halted a two-game Hoya losing streak. Prior to the contest the Dukes were ranked #24 in the nation by Soccer Buzz as well as occupying the fourth and fifth spots on the Soccer Buzz and NSCAA/adidas Regional Polls respectively. This win by the Hoyas is the first of the season against a ranked opponent.
Following a scoreless first half, Georgetown freshman Shara McNeill (Avon, Conn./Avon) opened the scoring with her first of the season at 52:53 off a rebound of her own shot, initially saved by the Dukes? keeper. Less than two minutes later Nicole DePalma's (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) corner deflected off the goaltender and into the back of the net.
The Hoyas put up their third goal at 76:28 when Jessie Beers-Altman (State College, Pa./State College) scored off a header served up from a free kick by Elizabeth Roberti (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side).
Hoya goaltender Alexis George (Woodbury, N.J./Haddonfield) was solid in the nets making three saves to help Georgetown to their first shutout of the season.
The Hoyas travel to Greenville, North Carolina for their next contests, competing in the Furman Tournament over the weekend. Georgetown opens against the host team Friday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Sunday, September 15th noon matinee against Wofford.
