9/26/2002 WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown University men's basketball player, Mike Sweetney (So., Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill), was a member of the 2001 USA World Championship for Young Men's team that won the gold medal in Saitama, Japan this past Sunday.

After earning a spot on the 12-man roster earlier this summer, Sweetney played in five games and finished the Championship with a 5.2 ppg and 2.4 rpg average. He shot 11-19 from the floor during the competition and ripped down 12 boards. He also had seven assists and four blocks.

Sweetney had an outstanding freshman season on the Hilltop. He was an Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST selection and was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. The 6-8 forward started all 33 games in his first season and led the club in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (7.4).
