Hoyas Fall at Hall

1/15/2003

The Hoyas (9-3, 1-1) lost at Seton Hall (6-7, 1-3) on 1/14/03 in their lowest scoring game of the season, 54-68. Mike Sweetney paced Georgetown?s scoring with 22 points and all rebounders with 9 boards. Mike also had 4 blocks and 2 assists. Victor Samnick provided the only other bright spot on an exceptionally cold shooting night by adding 11 tallies.

In the opening half, Brandon Bowman?s perfect 3 for 3 from the field did little to cure the shooting malaise that gripped the rest of the team. Missing the offensive spark off the bench of Ashanti Cook, (sidelined by an ankle injury sustained in the Duke game), GU shot 33% (9-27) for the half, while Seton Hall blistered the nets at a 55.6% (15-27) clip. Georgetown also trailed in the rebound category 13-21.

In the second stanza the Hoyas? shooting woes continued. Missing 13 attempts from beyond the arc (admittedly, a stat inflated by desperation shots in the closing minutes, but alarming nonetheless) GU ended with only 2 for 20 (10%) from long range. The Hoyas did improve their rebounding, grabbing 24 to the Hall?s 17 and cut their deficit to 6 at the 9 minute mark with an 8-2 run, but failed to prevent Allen?s long range shooting from undoing the gain.

For the game the Pirates shot 48.9% (22-45) to Georgetown?s 32.2% (19-59). There were 38 turnovers in the game (19 for each squad). The Hoyas pulled down seven more offensive caroms than the Pirates but the overall tally favored the Hall 37-38.
