1/27/2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The men's tennis team encountered stiff competition at the Virginia Commonwealth University 4+1 Invitational. The Hoyas competed on Friday January 24 losing two close matches and on Sunday January 26 where they lost to two nationally ranked teams.

On Friday afternoon the Hoyas faced the James Madison University Dukes at 4:00 p.m. Georgetown took the first point of the match as the doubles team of Eric Bildman (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin School) and Ryan Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day School) downed JMU's Knehr and Malcolm 6-2, 6-2. It was the Hoyas only win in the match as JMU swept the four singles matches in straight sets. The final score was Georgetown-1, James Madison-4.

Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. Georgetown faced Radford. Again, the Hoyas received solid doubles play from Peisel and partner Dennis Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) who defeated Mengisteb and Soeur 6-2, 6-3. Marc Lohser (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset), at #1 singles, outlasted RU's Vasarevic 7-6, 6-7, 12-10 to secure the only other Hoya team point. Radford won #2, #3, and #4 singles in straight sets. The final score was Georgetown-2, Radford-3.

The Hoyas returned to Richmond, Va. on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. match against #16 ranked Virginia Commonwealth. The Hoyas lost all four singles matches in straight sets, but picked up one team point as VCU defaulted the doubles match. The final score was Georgetown-1, #16 VCU-4.

Immediately following the loss to VCU, Georgetown faced #65 Old Dominion in their final match of the Invitational. Georgetown played very well in the doubles competition, but ODU swept the two tough doubles matches and as well the three singles matches in straight sets.

The Georgetown squad next faces the Midshipmen of the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday evening February 1 at 5:00 p.m. at the Big Vanilla Racquet Club in Arnold, Md.
